Our modern English word atonement derives from the Middle English word meaning at-one-ment . It speaks of reconciliation between two estranged parties, making the two to become one. This concept is set forth in expressions like “the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him” (Leviticus 4:26, et.al.). When an Israelite sinned, he estranged himself from God. He therefore brought a sacrificial animal to the priest, who offered it before God upon His altar, and its blood covered the offender’s offense, obtained his forgiveness from God, and reconciled him unto God. All this was typical of what Jesus Christ, the High Priest over God’s people, has done for them. The atonement wrought by Jesus Christ is a gracious atonement.
