A Miracle of Grace

"Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? " - Song of Solomon 8:5 [KJV]   Who! the wonder and joy of angels, the envy of devils, the contempt of the world, because a miracle of grace. Upon whom shines the glory of God’s justice, the riches of mercy, the abounding of His love, and the efficacy of His power? It is, a poor sinner, hopeless, and helpless in himself, coming up from a dismal, dreadful, dangerous state, leaning upon one who is mighty to save. Some over-rate Christians. They paint their characters so very strong and perfect, as though they forgot that they are in themselves nothing but poor sinners, whose nature is only evil continually. And these people also under-rate them, not considering what they are in Christ— new creatures, perfectly righteous—without spot of sin— infinitely glorious and comely in God’s sight.    Consider, (1st.) this wilderness. You are in it, and will be coming up out of it, till you get out...

'Till He Come

"For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till He come." -I Corinthians 11:26 [KJV]   An evening or two since, my mind was led out to the contemplation of the supper of the Lord, as a heart-affecting ordinance, to make the Lord's table a Bochim . I hope, my soul, that in this view, thou didst find it profitable. Here is another proposed to thy meditation, which, under grace, will prove equally so, in which it comes home to thy affections as a subject of holy joy. Look at it in this light, and remark what the apostle saith upon it. The Lord's death, which is thy life, is set forth by every renewed celebration. And what a delightful thought is that.    As the body needs its constant regular meals, so doth the soul. And as Jesus is the whole of life, and strength, and happiness to His people; as oft as we receive the holy supper, we testify to the world of men and angels, that He is all this; and we glory in sett...

THE ENDS OF THE EARTH ~ Wonder of Wonders!

"Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else." -Isaiah 45:22 [KJV] Till in soul feeling, we are at "the ends of the earth," we have no eyes to see, no ears to hear, no hearts to feel what a glorious Mediator there is at the right hand of the Father. And the more we feel to be at "the ends of the earth," the deeper is our need of Him; and as the Spirit unfolds the mystery of the glorious Person of Christ, and reveals His beauty, the more does He become the object of the soul's admiration and adoration. And O what a Mediator is held out in the word of truth to living faith! What a subject for spiritual faith to look to, for a lively hope to anchor in, and for divine love to embrace!    That the Son of God, who lay in the bosom of the Father from all eternity, equal with the Father and the Holy Ghost, the second Person in the glorious Trinity, should condescend to take upon Him our nature, ...
