THE EMINENT DISPLAYS OF GOD's GRACE

"This people have I formed for Myself: they shall shew forth My praise."   - Isaiah 42:21 [KJV]   What says the world, of God’s new formed creatures? “These men turn the world upside down” (Acts 17:6.) Well, if they do, is it not right? Seeing the devil by sin turned it upside down once, Christ, by the power of His grace, turned it upside down again, then it is turned into its right state. The Lord is here about to perform a wonder of grace. He calls for our special attention to it. “Behold, I will do a new thing” (verse 19.) He was going to take those who were not a people, to make them His people. The eminent displays of God’s grace, should be the admiration of our hearts, and the glory of our souls.    See (1st.) the description of this people. They are compared to the beasts of the field, to dragons and owls. Yet the Lord calls them “My people, My chosen.” My soul, remember what thy nature is. As filthy as a beast, as fierce as a dragon, as stupi...

The Wonders of JEHOVAH's Redemption!

"The pool of Siloam." -John 9:7 [KJV]   It was a very gracious account given by the Holy Ghost, in the writings of His servants the prophets, that in the last days, meaning gospel days, "living waters should go forth of Jerusalem;" and saith the Lord, "it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth which moveth, whithersoever the river shall come, shall live;" Ezekiel 47: 9 . And in the day of Christ's flesh, we find Jesus giving life wheresoever He came: and not unfrequently, as if to testify the sovereignty of His power, He communicated His blessing in this life-giving principle of Himself, by means altogether, to outward view, unpromising.   The clay applied to the eyes of one born blind, and the pool of Siloam, are both directly in point. It is just so, blessed Jesus, that I would have recourse to ordinances and means of grace, and when I attend, I would desire to pass over them to the enjoyment of Thyself, and the gracious infl...

Faith in Exercise

"And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments, or no." -Deuteronomy 8:2 [KJV]   When you look back upon the way the Lord has led you these many years in the wilderness, can you not see how circumstance after circumstance, and event after event arose, to prove what was in you; whether godly fear, whether simplicity and sincerity, whether a desire to fear God, whether a dread to offend Him, whether the life and power of vital godliness, or whether little else than an empty profession without the life-giving power of God in the soul?    What a mercy for you to be able to look back and see how the Lord appeared for you, when without Him you must have sunk; when you can feel, to your soul's comfort, that the Lord did uphold you in the trying hour, did appear for you in distressing circumstanc...
