GRACIOUS ATONEMENT!

Our modern English word atonement derives from the Middle English word meaning at-one-ment. It speaks of reconciliation between two estranged parties, making the two to become one.

This concept is set forth in expressions like “the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him” (Leviticus 4:26, et.al.). When an Israelite sinned, he estranged himself from God. He therefore brought a sacrificial animal to the priest, who offered it before God upon His altar, and its blood covered the offender’s offense, obtained his forgiveness from God, and reconciled him unto God.

All this was typical of what Jesus Christ, the High Priest over God’s people, has done for them.

The atonement wrought by Jesus Christ is a gracious atonement. We see three proofs of this in Isaiah chapter 53, a foremost passage in Holy Scriptures regarding the atonement.

     1. No one deserved this atonement (v.6a): “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way” (v.6a).

     2. God the Father graciously ordained this atonement (v.10): “it pleased Jehovah to bruise Him [Jesus Christ]; He has put Him to grief. ... You [made] His soul an offering for sin.”

     3. Jesus Christ graciously wrought this atonement (vv.11f): Jehovah said of Him, “My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities. ... He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

Therefore, atonement is ALL OF GOD’S GRACE AND NONE OF OUR WORKS.

This gracious atonement is received by all who answer affirmatively the question at the beginning of Isaiah chapter 53: “Who hath believed our report?”

Has Jesus Christ made atonement for you?
