Examining True & False Repentance

"The difference between true and false repentance is as great as that between the running of water in the paths after a violent shower, and the streams which flow from a living fountain.  A false repentance has grief of mind and humiliation only for great and glaring offences, or until it supposes pardon for them obtained: true repentance is a continued war against sin, a permanent inward shame for its defilements, until death sounds the retreat. WE GLORY IN JESUS

WE GLORY IN JESUS    To glory in ourselves we’re prone, Because we’re vain and full of pride; Lord, keep this vaunting spirit down, In Thee to boast, and nought beside    What Jesus is of God to me, And not what in myself I am; Shall all my glory daily be, That I am righteous in the LAMB.                                                             -------O-------   THE SCRIPTURE       “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”   -II Timothy 3:16 [KJV]      Let me break this verse down.   “All scripture” - not only the New Testament, but the Old Testament as well.  No part of scripture is unnecessary, and no part ever becomes obsolete.   “But...

Sure Evidence Whether Your Heart is Towards Christ JESUS...

"Saw ye Him whom my soul loveth?" - Song of Solomon 3:3 [KJV] An abrupt question. Very oddly stated. Had this enquirer no name for her beloved? Can she suppose every one she asks, knew who was the beloved of her soul, and was acquainted with her loss of him? The spouse of Christ here seems to be in great discomposure of mind. Just like a tender mother, who had lost the beloved son of her womb: or an affectionate wife, in search after an indulgent husband; thinking every one has heard of her distress, asks with the utmost eagerness, Have you seen him?     O for more of this love of Christ in our souls! Observe here, the actings of a gracious heart, under the sense of Christ’s withdrawing His comforting presence. That Christ, for wise and good ends best known to Himself, doth withdraw Himself, is a truth that has been experienced by all His saints. You have not been long married to Christ, if you have not taken up the words of the church of old, “Verily Thou art a...

Lights & Perfections in Christ JESUS Alone

"The Urim and the Thummim." -Exodus 28:30 [KJV]   There is somewhat very interesting in this account of "the Urim and the Thummim;" though in the present distance of time, we can at the best form nothing more than conjectures as to what it was. But through grace, and the teaching of the Holy Ghost, we can have clear views of what it meant. The general acceptations of the Hebrew words, are, lights and perfections . And as Aaron, as high priest, became a lively type of Christ, so, by bearing on his breast-plate "the Urim and the Thummim," there can be no difficulty in beholding Jesus represented as the light and perfection of His people. And as Aaron bare all the names of the people upon his breast, where "the Urim and Thummim" were worn; how delightful is it to see Jesus thus represented, as bearing all the persons of His redeemed, in His own light and perfection, when He goes in before the presence of God for us!   Sweet and pr...

A Most Heavenly Treasure

"The Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God." -I Corinthians 2:10 [KJV]   The Spirit of God which dwelleth in a man, making his body His temple, searcheth the deep things of God; for there is in these deep things a most heavenly treasure, which is to be searched into that it may be found. What depths do we sometimes see in a single text of Scripture as opened to the understanding, or applied to the heart; what a depth in the blood of Christ: how it "cleanseth from all sin , " and if from all sin it must cleanse away millions of millions of the foulest sins of the foulest sinners. What a depth in His bleeding, dying love that could stoop so low to lift us so high! What a depth in His pity and compassion to extend itself to such guilty, vile transgressors as we are! What depth in the eternal counsels and unspeakable wisdom of God to contrive such a plan as was accomplished and brought to light in the incarnation and death of His dear S...
