No Rest Except in Calling Upon God

"But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light; for whatsoever doth make manifest is light." -Ephesians 5:13 [KJV]   Feeling is the first evidence of supernatural life; a feeling compounded of two distinct sensations, one referring to God, and the other referring to self. The same ray of light has manifested two opposite things, "for that which maketh manifest is light;" and the sinner sees at one and the same moment God and self, justice and guilt, power and helplessness, a holy law and a broken commandment, eternity and time, the purity of the Creator and the filthiness of the creature. And these things he sees, not merely as declared in the Bible, but as revealed in himself as personal realities, involving all his happiness or all his misery in time and in eternity. Thus it is with him as though a new existence had been communicated, and as if for the first time he had found there was a God. One ray of supernatural light, penetrati...

Have Mercy, O LORD JESUS

" For Thy name’s sake, O L ORD , pardon mine iniquity, for it is great." -Psalm 25:11 [KJV] Strange plea! Great is mine iniquity, therefore pardon it! Such an address at a throne of grace, never arose from a self-righteous heart. No: with the Pharisee of old, such are ready to say, “Thank God I am not such a sinner as David was: I never committed the horrid crimes of murder and adultery: his iniquity was great indeed.” It was so; but souls, enlightened by the word of truth, to see the spirituality of the holy law of God, will agree to our Saviour’s comment upon it, that lust is adultery in the heart, and anger a species of murder in the soul (Matthew 5:28.) “Out of the heart proceed murders, adulteries,” etc. (ch. 15:19.)   Sensible of the desperate wickedness of our heart, convinced of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, who will dare plead, Pardon mine iniquity, for it is little? Is it against a little God, sin is committed? Is it a little wrath revealed agains...

The Finished Redemption of the LORD JESUS Christ!

"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished. " -John 19:30 [KJV] Perhaps these words formed the sixth cry of the Lord Jesus on the cross. The glorious close of all His sufferings was now arrived; and full of these high ideas which occupied His holy mind, He cried out, "It is finished!" What is finished? Redemption-work is finished. All the long series of prophecies, visions, types, and the shadows of good things to come, which pointed to Jesus and redemption by Him, were now finished in their accomplishment. The law was finished in its condemning power; and the gospel commenced its saving influence. Jesus, by that One Sacrifice now offered, had for ever perfected them that are sanctified. The separation between Jew and gentile was now finished and done away for ever. Jesus had now "gathered together, in one, all the children of God which are scattered abroad." The iron reign of sin and Satan, of death and hell, w...

THE WORD OF PROMISE, THE WORD OF TRUTH & THE WORD OF SALVATION

"Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you." - Jesus Christ the LORD , as per John 15:3 [KJV] What God does, He does by the word of His grace and the influences which accompany that word; for ever bear in mind that God does nothing but by His word. The sanctifying, cleansing effects therefore which attend the word of His grace under the operations of the Spirit are spoken of as "the washing of water by the word" (Ephesians 5:26). "The word" is the written Scripture; the "water" is the power of the Holy Ghost; the "washing" is the cleansing effect of the application of the word. Let me ask you this question, if you doubt my words, How are we to get the burden and guilt of our sins off our conscience, the defilement of mind which sin produces, the bondage of spirit which sin creates, the fears and alarm of the soul which sin works? You will say, "By believing in Jesus Christ, for being justified ...
