The sanctifying, cleansing effects therefore which attend the word of His grace under the operations of the Spirit are spoken of as "the washing of water by the word" (Ephesians 5:26). "The word" is the written Scripture; the "water" is the power of the Holy Ghost; the "washing" is the cleansing effect of the application of the word.
