"For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things." -A CTS 15:28 [KJV] When the brethren in Jerusalem wrote this inspired letter to the church in Antioch they declared this strong Biblical principle that the testimony of God plainly sets forth, "For it seemed good (pleasing) to the Holy Ghost, and to us." What is pleasing to God in creation, providence and salvation is also most pleasing to His covenant people. We say with David, "But our God is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased" [PSALM 115:3 ] . Or with Eli, "It is the LORD: let Him do what seemeth Him good [I SAMUEL 3:18 ] . Even where grace has set up its throne, and mercy rejoices over judgment, many unbelieving, infidel thoughts at times will cross the mind and perplex the judgment about the separation of body and soul, and the launching of the spirit into an unseen, unknown world. Faith, it is true, can subdue these perplexing thoughts, better hinted at than described, but faith needs some solid ground on which to build and rest. If, then, the soul is blessed with any assured hope or sweet persuasion of interest in the blood and obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ, so as to remove guilty fears, how strengthening to faith is a view of His death, not merely as the only sacrifice for sin, but as the exemplar, so to speak, of our own. ...

“ He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” -R OMANS 8:32 [KJV] This verse supplies us with an instance of Divine logic! It contains a conclusion drawn from a premise. The premise is that God delivered up Christ for all His people therefore, everything else that is needed by them is sure to be given. Here we are told why the Father made such a costly sacrifice: He spared not Christ – that He might spare us! It was not lack of love to the Savior, but wondrous, matchless, fathomless love for us! To so many, the Word of God is a dead book. It is because they are dead in their sins, having the heart and mind darkened [ E PHESIANS 4:18 ] . They do not rejoice in the glorious Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ that it reveals, because it takes eyes to see. They rest in their works and boast of their will, their faith, and their goodness, because their eyes have never been opened to see the truth of God’s sovereign will, that faith is the gift of God, and that the only good is the perfect obedience of Christ put to the sinner’s account.
