When their Lord and Master died, their hopes, for the time at least, seem almost to have died with Him. "Make me not the reproach of the foolish." -P SALM 39:8 [KJV]   Who are these "foolish?" I think the best answer to this question is given by our Lord Himself, in the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. "The foolish" were those who had oil in their lamps, but none in their vessels. By "the foolish" in the text, therefore, we may understand those who have the light of knowledge in their heads, and the lamp of profession in their hands, but no oil of grace in their hearts. Because redemption happened in the past, in history, redemption cannot be undone or added to. Nothing more is needed. It is finished. He rules over all things and all people. Whatever powers might exist on earth, they are subservient to God who rules alone. He does His will in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth and none can question or stop Him. This is true in all things but especially in that business which is His greatest glory, the salvation of His people in Christ. He purposed it in Christ before the world began. He did all necessary to save them in a way glorifying to His just and holy character through the substitutionary death of Christ and He will make manifest this salvation to them for the glory of His grace . "I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do." - JOHN 17:4 [KJV] These words were spoken by our Savior at the beginning of His High Priestly prayer. He speaks in anticipation of accomplishing the task assigned to Him in the covenant of grace, which He delightfully agreed to do. The work for which He was chosen was to join Himself to human flesh and be "made under the law to redeem them that were under the law." As the God-Man, He would have to give His life a ransom for those entrusted to Him by the Father in electing grace. His work was to satisfy divine justice by enduring the penalty of the law in the stead of His people who would break the law and become deserving of death. His work was to establish righteousness, purge away the guilt of sin, save, redeem and satisfy divine justice for all those chosen by the Father in distinguishing mercy before the world began.
