Not merely to see a certain truth in God's word; that is like a hungry beggar looking at savoury provision through a window, from which he is barred out; such a sight whets his appetite rather than satisfies it. The meat that God's people are longing after, and the only thing which can assuage their spiritual hunger, is "the truth as it is in Jesus" manifested, revealed, discovered, and applied with power to their souls; dew, unction, savour, sweetness, life, light, liberty accompanying the word, so that truth falls as heavenly manna into their hearts. If you notice, much of the news that is printed and broadcast in our day is full of “may” or “could” or “might.” A new medicine “may” help certain physical conditions. Something “could” have this effect politically. An individual “might” do such and such. Not news but speculation! That is the news of man: he might possibly do something but nothing is for sure! This is not so with the “news” of God’s gospel! It is as sure as He is as the immutable, almighty and all-knowing God of truth. That is why the gospel of the grace of God in Christ is always “good news” to His believing people. In the gospel of Jesus Christ there is a clear proclamation of the will and purpose of the eternal God. False religion emphasizes what God will do if men and women do certain things but the true gospel declares what God has done. He has loved a people with an everlasting love, chosen them in Christ out of Adam’s fallen race, put them in an everlasting covenant of which Christ is the Angel...

Long before the law was given by Moses, our whole race fell when Adam fell in the garden of Eden. Adam, a representative man, sinned against God and in him “ all sinned” [ROMANS 5:12 ] . This is why “ death reigned from Adam to Moses” [ROMANS 5:14 ] . But the penalty for sin against God is far more than physical death. Sin cannot be reversed, it must be punished. The penalty God requires for sin is death, a death that will satisfy divine justice. “ Behold, all souls are Mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is Mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die” [EZEKIEL 18:4 ] . “ For the wages of sin is death...” [ROMANS 6:23 ] .
