Thanks be to God for any bread that he gives us in His kind and bountiful providence. An honest living is a great mercy. To be enabled by the labour of our hands or by the labour of our brain to maintain our families and bring them up in a degree of comfort, if not abundance, is a great blessing. But God has determined that His people shall not live by bread only. They shall be separated from the mass of men who live in this carnal way only; who have no care beyond earthly possessions, and the sum of whose thoughts and desires is, what they shall eat, and what they shall drink, and wherewithal the...

"Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you" -I S AMUEL 12:22 [KJV] The word "ceasing" means to forsake, leave off, let alone, or be unoccupied. Samuel says that to forsake praying for God's people is sin. To leave off coming to God in humble supplication for the lost is sin. To let alone the throne of grace, to which every child of God is privileged to come freely, is to foolishly forfeit our only hope and strength. To be unoccupied in begging mercy from God for others, is horribly sinful for those who have received mercy. God forbid us from ceasing to pray for each other. God make us to be like our dear Savior, who ever lives to make intercession for us! And not only is the Lord Jesus Christ glorious in His essential Deity as the Son of God, but glorious also in His holy, spotless humanity which He assumed in the womb of the Virgin Mary. For this, though the flesh and blood of the children, was "that holy thing which was begotten of the Holy Ghost," and was taken into union with His eternal Deity, that He might be "Immanuel, God with us." The purity, holiness and innocence, the spotless beauty and complete perfection of this human nature, make it in itself exceedingly glorious; but its great glory is the union that it possesses...

To redeem poor sinners, Jesus Christ came down from heaven, put on the rags of our mortality, agonized, bled, and died. Jesus is made His people's substitute, burden-bearer, sin-remover, guilt-sustainer. Their debt is placed to His account. His riches pay the full amount. Sin is removed from the sinner and placed on the Sinless! Their curse is rolled on Him, and He endures it, until no more remains! God deals with Jesus as the guilty one! He, as spotless Deity, receives imputed sins, and fully expiates them all. In the vicarious victim, God's justice is satisfied, and wrath expires! Jesus, in His life, in the garden, on the cross suffers their sufferings, dies their death, and so becomes their uttermost salvation! His pains are their pardon! His stripes are their healing!
