WE GLORY IN JESUS

WE GLORY IN JESUS

To glory in ourselves we’re prone,

Because we’re vain and full of pride;

Lord, keep this vaunting spirit down,

In Thee to boast, and nought beside

 What Jesus is of God to me,

And not what in myself I am;

Shall all my glory daily be,

That I am righteous in the LAMB.

THE SCRIPTURE

 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” -II Timothy 3:16 [KJV]

Let me break this verse down.  “All scripture”- not only the New Testament, but the Old Testament as well.  No part of scripture is unnecessary, and no part ever becomes obsolete.  “But the word of the Lord endureth forever.  And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (I Peter 1:22).  All sixty-six books are eternally joined together and set forth the wonderful gospel of Jesus Christ and His work of redemption for guilty sinners.  In the Old Testament the gospel of glad tidings is proclaimed in picture, prophesy and promise.  In the New Testament it is declared clearly and unmistakably in the incarnation, life, substitutionary death, triumphant resurrection and mediatorial reign of Jesus Christ.  “For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5).

Is given by inspiration of God” - the scripture is God breathed.  The Word of the Lord is the very breath of God.  This holy book is of divine origin, which is its authority and it is divinely preserved.

“And is profitable” - all scripture was given for our benefit, for our advantage.  It sets forth God as He is, men as we are and addresses that all important issue of Job 25:4: “How then can man be justified with God?  Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?”  The answer to those questions is clear:  sinful men are accepted by God only through the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“For doctrine” - these are the teachings of our Lord.  “My doctrine” the LORD said, “shall drop as the rain, and my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass” (Deuteronomy 32:2).

“For reproof” - this means to convince.  The core word is proof.  All of the proof or evidence we need of the truthfulness of the gospel is to be found in this inspired book of God.

“For correction” - this means to restore to an upright state; to make straight.  We died in Adam’s fall, Romans 5:12; this book shows how sinners are made upright again, how we can be restored and made straight - through the blood and righteousness of the Son of God Who died for sinners that God might be just and Justifier of all who believe on the Savior.

“For instruction in righteousness” - the Word of God is given that we might be taught of righteousness.  This is what a holy God demands of you and me, yet it is impossible for us to produce that which He requires.  “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10).   In the scripture we are taught how the sinful can be made righteous.  “For He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (II Corinthians 5:21).

Christ Jesus is, to everyone who believes on Him, “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS” (Jeremiah 23:6).  “But of Him (God) are ye in Christ Jesus, Who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (I Corinthians 1:30-31).
