How should a sinner approach Jesus Christ?

In Matthew 8:1–4, we meet a leper who came to Christ helpless, unclean, and in desperate need. He did not come boasting of his goodness or presenting his works. He came worshiping Christ and said, “Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.” This powerful sermon examines the faith and attitude of this man and shows us how sinners should approach the Lord Jesus Christ. The leper teaches us four essential truths:

1. Worship Christ. He fell before Jesus and worshiped Him—even before he was cleansed.

2. Recognize that Jesus Christ is Lord. The leper called Him “Lord” and acknowledged His absolute authority and power.

3. Submit to the will of God. He said, “If Thou wilt,” recognizing that salvation and mercy are according to God’s will and grace, not human merit or works.

4. Recognize our greatest need: to be clean. The deepest need of a sinner is not merely health, wealth, comfort, or earthly blessing, but cleansing from sin and acceptance before a holy God.

This message also explores Abraham, Job, David, the publican, the thief on the cross, Ephesians chapter 1, Romans ch. 14, John 1, John 5, II Timothy 1, and Psalm 51 to show that salvation is of the Lord and that only God can give spiritual life and cleanse the sinner. Jesus Christ is not merely someone we choose to make Lord. He is Lord. He has all authority in heaven and earth. If you are seeking Christ, don’t come trusting in your works, religion, promises, or human ability. Come as the leper came—with humility, worship, dependence, and a recognition of your need for mercy. “Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.”
