More Gospel Truth, Part III

by D G Miles McKee

Many church people whom I´ve met tell me that we can be saved then lost.  When they tell me these things I always point them to the following scripture,

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 8:38-39

There was a monumental preacher in London, England in the 19th century named Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Someone asked the great preacher, “What persuasion are you?”  In other words, the inquirer wanted to know whether Spurgeon was Methodist or Baptist, Anglican or whatever.  Spurgeon answered instantly; “Let me tell you my persuasion, I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

What a brilliant response. Is that also our persuasion?

The blood bought believer is persuaded that Jesus is who He says He is?

We are persuaded that He has done what He says He has done?

We are also persuaded that He will do what He has promised to do.

We will never come to assurance of salvation by countless hours of introspection.  It is only as we look outside ourselves to the person of Christ and His finished, accomplished work on our behalf that we can enter rest. Assurance of faith comes by believing the perfection of Christ and His sacrifice (see Hebrews 9:22; Revelation 1:5; Ephesians 1:7).

“Jesus put all my sins away

When bruised to make me whole;

Who shall accuse, or who condemn,

My blameless, ransomed soul?”

To be persuaded means that both our minds and hearts believe these facts. These are facts that we rest upon. As we grow in assurance of salvation, we learn to rest entirely on the best news in the cosmos --that nothing can ever separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A man complained to an old-time preacher saying, "I will not go on unless I know I'm saved, or else know it's hopeless to seek to be sure of it. I want a definite witness, something I can't be mistaken about!"

The preacher replied, "Suppose you had a vision of an angel who told you your sins were forgiven. Would that be enough to rest on?"

"Yes, I think it would. An angel should be right."

The preacher continued, "But suppose on your deathbed Satan came and said, 'I was that angel, transformed to deceive you.' What would you say?" The man was speechless.

The preacher then told him that God has given us something more dependable than the voice of an angel. He has given Himself, shed His own blood, died for our sins, and has testified in His own Word that in Him all our sins are gone.

The preacher then read I John 5:13, "That ye may know that ye have eternal life." Then he said, "Is the shed blood of the Finished Work not enough to rest on? God's Spirit used that truth to bring assurance to the man's heart.

And that´s the Gospel Truth!
