My Big Brother
Hebrews 2:11 says, “For both He (Christ Jesus) that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified (the chosen sinner) are all of one: for which cause He (the Lord Jesus) is not ashamed to call them brethren.”
Growing up as an “only child” I always wished I had a “big brother.” Then, in His appointed time, God made known to me that Christ had been my Elder Brother all along. He is not one who simply shares my DNA. He took my nature without losing His divine glory. “The Word was made flesh.” (John 1:14) That alone sets Him apart.
A big brother might protect you, but he cannot redeem you. Christ didn’t just stand beside the sinner; He stood in their place. The Lord Jesus bore the wrath I deserved, carried the sin I couldn’t carry, fulfilled the law I could never keep, and satisfied the justice I could never appease.
A natural big brother might guide you, but He can’t bring you to God. A big brother might help improve your standing, but the Lord Jesus gives us His perfect standing before God.
Even the closest earthly brother may eventually turn away in shame. But the Lord Jesus is not nor will He ever be ashamed to call His people “brethren.”
Reverently, the Lord Jesus Christ transcends any notion of being an ordinary “Big Brother.” He is the eternal Son of God who became flesh, died for enemies, rose as Lord, and now calls redeemed sinner’s “brethren” by grace; not by equality, but by redemption. There is no big brother like Him.
