"By the high-way side begging." -Mark 10:46 [KJV] My soul, learn a lesson from the beggar this morning. And Oh Thou blessed Friend of beggars, do Thou sweetly make the view gracious to my soul. What was it led this poor man to the high-way side to seek alms? Surely his poverty, wretchedness, and a sense of want. And art thou come forth, my soul, from the same cause, and on the same errand? I presume this poor creature came forth empty; for had he been full he would never have come.  And art thou so, my soul! for otherwise it is certain, they that are full in themselves never seek Jesus. The more genuine, therefore, our religion is, the more simple it will be. To be simple is to be child-like, and to be child-like is to have the mind and spirit without which no man can enter into the kingdom of heaven. Can we, then, with this child-like simplicity, walk step by step here with David, and follow him throughout? Can we put our seal to these things and say, "Lord, what wait I for?" He is the sum and substance of the gospel of peace, whereby our feet are shod to march against the enemy.  (3d.) The Author and Object of faith. Our shield, to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.  (4th.) Our helmet of hope. Thus, by the grace of the Spirit, put Him on as your armour. Then, what dangers may you not face? What enemies have you to fear?  But forget not your sword. Though but just entered the field, you must know the use of it, and necessity for it. It is offensive to your enemy. Defensive of yourself.
