"Come unto M e, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." -Matthew 11:28 [KJV] When we rest, we find relief to our weary limbs. So spiritually. When the soul comes to Jesus, H e gives it rest and relief from its burdens; as well as deliverance from anxiety, and cessation from the labour that distresses and distracts it. He promises to give this— "Come unto M e, and I" —who else can do it? None, either in heaven or earth— "Come unto M e, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." How?   By communicating to the soul out of His infinite fulness, by sprinkling upon the conscience His atoning blood, by shedding abroad in the heart His dying love, and enabling the soul to believe on His name, and cling to His Person. In this there is rest—nothing else will do it—nothing else will give it. Other remedies will leave us at last under the wrath of God. But he that comes to and leans upon Jesus, His finished work, ...

Think about this. Where shall you find a rock on which you may build a happiness that will stand the shock in that dreadful day of God’s righteous judgment? Anything and everything else besides Christ is sliding sand, yielding air, and a breaking bubble! In that dread day wealth will prove to be a vain shadow, honor will prove to be an empty breath, pleasure will prove to be a delusive dream, your own righteousness will prove to be a spider's web! If we rely on these, disappointment and doom are inevitable! Nothing but Christ, NOTHING BUT CHRIST, can stably support us in that dread day! “He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved” (Psalm 62:2) . His righteousness is infinitely perfect, equal to the highest demands of the divine law, and therefore a firm, immovable ground of trust. We may safely venture the weight of our eternal all upon this rock! It will stand forever, without giving way under the heaviest pressure, without being broke...

"That they all may be one, as T hou, Father, art in M e, and I in T hee, that they also may be one in U s: that the world may believe that T hou hast sent M e." -John 17:21 [KJV] The apostle declares, "He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit" ( I Cor inthians 6:17) . If, then, we are joined to the Lord, in other words, have a union with Him, this is the closest of all unions. A man and his wife are one flesh, but Jesus and the saint are one spirit. If possessed of this we are one spirit with Him; we understand what He says; we have the mind of Christ; we love what He loves, and hate what He hates. But out of this spiritual union flows communion with Him, intercourse with Him, communications from Him, and the whole of that divine work upon the heart whereby the two spirits become one.   The Spirit of Christ in His glorious Person and the Spirit of Christ in a believing heart meet together, and meeting together as two drops of rain running down a pane of...

"Then H e is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I HAVE FOUND A RANSOM ." -Job 33:24 [KJV] Consider this GREAT EXCHANGE between the Father and the Son in this all-important matter of the salvation of sinners. God CAN and MUST BE GRACIOUS to the objects of His love, and they MUST BE DELIVERED "from going down to the pit"because GOD RECEIVED SATISFACTION IN THE RANSOM PRICE OF HIS DEAR SON. The word translated "ransom"means ATONEMENT, reconciliation, forgiveness, purging away, to cover over, pacify, or PROPITIATE. Think about what this means. If the ETERNAL GOD was pacified, reconciled, received ATONEMENT, and FORGAVE SINNERS in the person of Christ (according to the above passage), HOW IN THE WORLD can He then turn around and put some of those SAME SINNERS, for whom He received the RANSOM PRICE REQUIRED in the glorious person and work of His dear Son, IN HELL? “ And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” -John 1:14 [KJV] When the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the living Word, was “made flesh,” He was not made sinful flesh. He was made flesh without sin for the purpose of doing His great work as the Surety, Substitute, and Redeemer of God’s chosen people. He was “made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law” (Galatians 4:4-5) . This means He had to die to satisfy God’s justice and be raised from the dead having brought forth spiritual and eternal life for His people. We behold His glory when we see the splendor and beauty of His Person. Christ is truly God manifest in the flesh (I Timothy 3:16) . We behold His glory when we are convinced by the Spirit of the success and power of His finished work of redemption to accomplish righteousness by which God is both a just God and a Savior and which guarantees t...

"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee." -Isaiah 43:2  [KJV] How many of the dear saints of God, when they have been brought into tribulation and sorrow, have found the fulfilment of this most gracious promise! And is there not one of these waters through which all must go—that deep and rapid Jordan which every one must pass through? How dark and gloomy those waters have appeared to the eyes of many a child of God, in whom is continually fulfilled the experience of the words, "Who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." But how often have these waters only been terrible in prospect, in anticipation. How different has been the reality.
