Happy the soul that has been awed by a view of God's majesty, that has had a vision of God's awful greatness, His ineffable holiness, His perfect righteousness, His irresistible power, His Sovereign grace. Does someone say, "But it is only the unsaved, those outside of Christ, who need to fear God"? Then the sufficient answer is that the saved, those who are in Christ, are admonished to work out their own salvation with "fear and trembling." Time was when it was the general custom to speak of a believer as a "God-fearing man"-that such an appellation has become nearly extinct only serves to show whither we have drifted. “ No man knoweth the Father, save the Son and he to whom the Son will reveal H im.” - MATTHEW 11:27 [KJV] Men may believe in God, but there is no way that they can know the living God except in Christ. They may know of His existence, but His essence and glory are only revealed in Christ. They may know of His works, but His will and wisdom are only seen in Christ. They may know of His power, but His purpose and decrees are only revealed in Christ. They may be acquainted with His miracles, but His mercy and grace are only received in Christ. They may behold His judgments, but His justice satisfied and honored is only revealed in Christ. If God is pleased to bestow saving mercy, is that not His prerogative? And is it not also His right, if He shows mercy, to bestow it upon whom He will? Mercy is not a matter of debt, but of royal kindness which God gives when and where it seems good in His sight. "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy." There is a promise that belongs to God’s redeemed and believing people in every age and in every circumstance. It is the promise of peace. Not peace without turmoil but peace in the midst of turmoil. This world, no matter what group rules it, since they are all sinners like us, will have trouble. Greed, thirst for power and glory, the very displays of the same fallen nature that plagues us will be demonstrated by them. So our peace will not come by what they do and certainly not by fretting over the state of affairs in our nation and world. No, this promise of peace is found in Isaiah 26:3 “ Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” But as in all the promises of God there is a character described of those to whom it belongs.
