In the plant world it appears that flower stems bend their flowers to follow the sun as it goes from horizon to horizon. Is the plant acting or is being acted upon? In truth, the plant is responding to a stimulus outside it self. Also, in truth, there is something in the plant that reacts to the outside stimulus. Inside the stem of the plant there is a hormone called Auxin. This hormone causes cells in the stem of the plant to elongate when light touches the plant. In the presence of sunlight the auxin migrates to the shady side of the plant stem and causes the cells on the shady side to elongate, thus bending the plant toward the light source. Sinners are unable to save themselves so if anyone is to be delivered from the curse of the law, from sin and from Satan, God must do it. You will concur with that, will you not? Since it is clear from Scripture and from experience that some are indeed saved, then God must have saved them. You are still in agreement with me, aren’t you? And, it being true that sinners are unable to save themselves and yet some are indeed saved and God must have saved them, then is it not evident that the Lord made a distinction between those who are saved and those who are not ? That distinction is called divine election. By the grace of God I believe the gospel of God’s sovereign grace, and I have been a believer for many years, but I still remain, in myself, a helpless sinner and in my flesh dwells no good thing. And yet, I am not filled with despair for I have a blessed Redeemer Who ever lives for me in glory. In Him I have no sin, my conscience has no sting of guilt and I have no fear of condemnation. Most people don't feel that they really need mercy. Do you need mercy? I do. Mercy is described as the kind treatment of those that have shown themselves your enemy. It is for the miserable. The mercy of God must of necessity be God not giving us what we deserve in ourselves. We deserve death and wrath from Him as the holy God because we are sinners who have sinned against Him! We have been “ enemies in our minds by wicked works .” We have trusted in and relied upon our own works to save us rather than the grace of God in Christ while the scriptures say clearly that it is “ not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to H is mercy H e saved us ” (Titus 3:5). God has said that “ it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy ” (Romans 9:16). But as H e ever lives at God's right hand and is ever interceding, ever presenting the perfume of H is acceptable mediation, this gives us a certain pledge of H is love, H is pity, and H is power. Is not this very encouraging to all who come unto God by H im? And may we not say, "Such are we, O Lord; we do come, we daily come to T hee by Jesus Christ?" And do we not need all the encouragement that God may give us out of it? for we often sink very low through temptation and trial and the manifold afflictions of the way. The other day I heard such an unbelievable and incredible statement of utter, outright heresy and blasphemy against God I could hardly believe what I heard.
