Chosen for Almighty GOD
"...all things were created by Him, and for Him." -Colossians 1:16 [KJV]
Did you know that the Lord loves His people, (those for whom He has died) with a very personal love? See Ephesians 1:4. If we are believers, we can say with confidence that He loves us. He has chosen us. He has lived for us. He has died for us. He has risen from the dead for us.
But even though these are precious truths, He wants us to know that behind them all it is for Him, not ourselves, that we have been created.
Let me illustrate.
Remember how in the book of Jonah, Jonah was called to preach at Ninevah. Being a prophet, he knew he was created by the Lord but he doesn´t quite seem to have grasped that he was created FOR the Lord. We read that to get away from the Almighty, Jonah rose up to flee. Here is a prophet who has forgotten good theology. Afterall, how does one flee from Omnipresence? As David said in Psalm 139:7-10, ‘Where shall I go from Thy Spirit or where shall I flee from Thy presence, if I ascend into Heaven, Thou art there. If I make my bed in Hell behold Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea even there shall Thy Hand lead me and Thy right hand shall hold me.’
In majestic response to Jonah´s actions the Lord sent a strong wind across the sea to catch Jonah´s attention.
Now, for a moment, let´s use our sanctified imagination and hear God saying to the wind, “Wind, I have a disobedient servant out there, so blow him back to Me.” I think I can hear the wind say, “Yes Lord I was created by You, and I was created for You.”
Then the Lord prepared a great fish, and I think I can hear the Lord say to the fish, ‘Listen fish, swallow Jonah but don’t eat him. Hold him for 3 days; be like a hell to him and then vomit him out on the shore. And I think I can hear the fish say, ‘Yes Lord, I was created by You and I am created for You.’
We also see in 1 King 17 Elijah the prophet is in a dangerous conflict with Ahab. The Lord basically said, ‘Elijah I am taking you out of public ministry.’ I imagine Elijah said, “But Lord who will feed me for I will be hiding and not earning a living. And the Lord said, “I have commanded the ravens to bring food both morning and evening’. By the way, ravens are among the greediest of birds, but God commanded them to look after Elijah. And I think I hear the ravens say, ‘Yes Lord we were created by You, and we were created FOR You.’
Furthermore, we read in Mark 11 about a wee donkey. Jesus said to His disciples about that donkey, “Go and loose him,’ and the disciples went and loosed him. There was no complaint. It was as if the donkey said to the Lord, “I am created by You and I am created FOR You’
However, some people standing by challenged the disciples asking, ‘Why are you losing the colt?’ And His disciples replied, ‘The Lord has need for him.’ That stopped the inquiry in its tracks and the onlookers said, “If the Lord needs him then take him. It was as if they said, “The little donkey was created by the Lord and created For Him.”
In Revelation 4:11 twenty-four elders were before the Throne crying out to the Lord Jesus, ‘Thou art worthy to receive glory honour power for Thou hast created all things and for Thy pleasure they were and are created.’
Are we getting the point?
We were created by Him, and we are created FOR Him. We are not independent from the Lord Jesus. We are not the center of everything. All things do not revolve around us. We are created FOR Him. We are here to serve Him and to bring glory to His name. This is not an option. The whole of nature knows this.
The Wind,
The Fish,
The Ravens,
And the Donkey knows this.
But what about us? Do we know that He has created us for Himself?
In the 1800s, John Patton, when he was preparing to go to the New Hebrides as a missionary, was telling people about his planned adventure. An older Christian tried to discourage him by saying, ‘The natives over there are cannibals and they will literally eat you.’ Patton replied, ‘Dear brother, with the greatest respect you are old and soon they will lay you in the grave. After that, the worms will eat you up. I want to spend my life serving the Lord Jesus Christ and it doesn´t much matter whether it’s Cannibals or worms which eat me.”
In other words what Patton was saying was, “I was created by Him, and I was created for Him.”
And that`s the Gospel Truth!
