Was Yahweh Ever Pierced?
by D. G. Miles McKee
“The head that once was crowned with thorns
Is crowned with glory now
A royal Diadem adorns
The mighty Victor’s brow.”
Thank God for the Old Testament prophets, prophets like Zechariah who exactly identifies the Lord Jesus. Listen as the seer gives a message from Yahweh foretelling events of the last day. He writes,
“And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” (Zechariah 12:10).
Did you catch that? The one from whom the message comes is Yahweh and notice what He claims! He asserts that He has been pierced! He says, “they shall look upon me whom they have pierced.” In other words, the pierced One is Yahweh Himself! But when was Yahweh ever pierced? He was pierced when, as a man, He hung upon a Roman cross and was executed as a common criminal.
John takes this up in the 19th chapter of his gospel. He writes,
“But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knows that he says true, that you might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of Him shall not be broken. And again another scripture says, They shall look on Him whom they pierced (John 19:34-37).
So, let’s absorb this. Yahweh prophesised that He would be pierced, but the New Testament tells us it was Jesus who was pierced. So, which one was pierced? Was it Jesus or Yahweh? This must remain an unsolvable problem for those who cannot see that Christ is Yahweh in human flesh appearing. Jesus and Yahweh are one and the same.
Of course, those who oppose the doctrine of the deity of Christ say that the KJV mistranslates this verse from Zechariah 12. According to these stout and reckless fellows it should say, “They shall look upon HIM” not “They shall look upon ME whom they have pierced.” To garner support for their "mission impossible" they hop from Bible version to Bible version to try to find one which agrees with their position. The RSV comes to their aid rendering the verse as, “Looking on him whom they have pierced” but NIV, NLT, NKJV, NASB, ASV, AMP, GENEVA STUDY BIBLE, WEBSTER, YOUNG, BRG, ESV and DARBY and many more say that the looking is unto “Me” whom they have pierced.
Another group of untiring and determined fellows also say that although this indeed refers to the piercing of Yahweh but it refers to Yahweh being pierced emotionally not physically.
This is almost laughable.
Why?
Because, although He was pierced with immense sorrow, (see Isaiah 52:13-53:12) His piercing, referred to here. was physical. They choose to ignore that the word used for “piercing” is, as the JFB (Jameson, Fausset and Brown) commentary informs us, “always used of a literal piercing; not of a metaphorical piercing----.”
And that´s the Gospel Truth!
Till He Comes.
