Every Good and Perfect Gift
"Every
good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from
the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of
turning." -JAMES
1:17 [KJV]
Every
good and perfect gift is from the sovereign throne of God [ROMANS
11:36],
whether in nature, providence or grace. All spiritual blessings are
of God and flow out to the sinner through the Lord Jesus Christ
[EPHESIANS
1:3-7].
Let us take full blame for our sin [JAMES
1:13-16]
and ascribe all glory
to God for "every
good and perfect gift"
[PSALM
115:1].
Notice several things!
1). "Every good and perfect gift is from above." Our blessed Redeemer came from above [JOHN 3:16, 6:38; GALATIANS 4:4]. Our salvation is from above, and is dependant upon God. The new birth, regeneration is from above [JOHN 3:3]. Righteousness that justifies is from above [ROMANS 4:1-8]. God alone is the origin, source and giver of all spiritual blessings [I CORINTHIANS 1:30 ; II THESSALONIANS 2:13-15].
2). "Every good and perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father." God will make application in time to the hearts of His covenant people [PHILIPPIANS 1:6]. Salvation is a heart work conducted and controlled by God the Holy Spirit, taking the things of Christ and making them rich and real in our heart [JOHN 16:7-14]. "Of His own will begat He us with the word of truth" [JAMES 1:18; JOHN 1:12-13]. Salvation is by the will of God [ROMANS 9:16], but not apart from the ministry of the word of truth [EPHESIANS 1:13-14; I PETER 1:18-25; I CORINTHIANS 1:18-24]. In every regenerated sinner we see three essentials, God's will, the Holy Spirit's conviction and the gospel truth [ROMANS 10:13-17].
3). "Every good and perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." Thanks be to God that He does not change. There is never a shade or an appearance of change, not in His person [MALACHI 3:6; HEBREWS 13:8], nor in His purpose [EPHESIANS1:11; ROMANS 8:28], nor in His promise [II PETER 1:1-4; ROMANS 4:20-21]. God's method of salvation has not, nor will it ever change. God has determined to save sinners only in the Lord Jesus Christ alone [ACTS 4:12; II TIMOTHY 1:9]. God, the Creator and Preserver of all things, is eternally the same, dispensing His good and perfect gifts sovereignly to whom He will [PSALM 135:5-6; DANIEL 4:34-35; JOHN 17:1-4].
