Peace Because of Peace!

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." -ROMANS 5:1 [KJV]

Peace with God is essential to our salvation and our comfort. I remember seeing signs as a child that said, “Make Peace With God.” God has been pleased to show me through His word that such a thing is impossible. No sinner can ever make peace with God for himself or anyone else! What we find out when God’s Spirit teaches us the truth of the gospel is that this is a thing already accomplished by Christ. “And, having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself; by Him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven” [COLOSSIANS 1:20]. The Lord Jesus Himself is both the Prince of Peace and the Peace of God.

But not only is this peace a thing accomplished by the cross death of Christ, it is also a thing to be experienced by those He died for. He made peace with God through the blood of His cross for a people who shall be brought to know this peace of God that passes understanding. How then is this peace realized? It is through believing. Through faith in Christ and what God declares of Him in His word! This is what Paul is saying in Romans 5:1. Christ’s death for His people must result in their peace of mind and conscience. Young’s Literal Translation translates this verse as: Having been declared righteous, then, by faith, we have peace toward God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is the sum of it: since we have been justified freely through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, since God has declared us righteous through His sufferings and death, the Spirit enables us to believe on Him which results in peace of conscience. The truth believed, that Christ has by Himself already accomplished our peace, gives us peace! God-given faith is the means by which He enables us to rest, to cease from fear and to enter into the joys of those reconciled to God. Isaiah declares the very truth of this. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee” [ISAIAH 26:3]. Thus we experience the peace of God because Christ made peace by the blood of His cross. Peace because of peace!
