PREDESTINATION AND PROVIDENCE
What is predestination? Before creation came into being, in eternity past, the triune God ordained or purposed everything that should ever exist and determined the end, the goal or the design of everyone and everything. The Bible name for this foreordination of the Lord is called predestination – to destine or determine. The prefix “pre” means the determination or destiny of all things prior to, or ahead of time. Surely no one would ever say that God has no purpose, for to act without purpose would be unthinkable. The predestinated purpose of God is eternal and unchangeable. “The LORD of hosts hath sworn saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand” (Isaiah 14:24). What is providence? It is the control, government and guidance of all people, places and things by the unlimited power and infinite wisdom of our great God. How then does the doctrine of predestination coincide with providence? While predestination ordained the existence, purpose and the end of all things, providence steers, directs and keeps everyone and everything on course so as to fulfill the aim for which they were predestinated. “In Whom (Christ) also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him Who worketh all things after the counsel of His Own will” (Ephesians 1:11).
Think of these two great doctrines this way. Predestination took place before time; therefore, the decrees of God are (and must be) eternal. Since providence is the carrying out of divine predestination, it must take place in time. Providence began with the words, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). It will continue all the way to the end of time, when Christ returns in power and great glory and time shall be no more. Predestination is, therefore, the will of God, whereas providence is the work of God bringing to pass His will.
