The Wednesday Word
Jesus
Is (Part
1)

John
Brown of Edinburgh once said, “It is because we think so little
about Jesus, that we love Him so little and trust Him so
little."
To help us remedy this, here are some
things about the Jesus that we can think about.
Jesus
is the exact representation of God (Hebrews 1:3).
No
one can explain God like Jesus for He is God. He is God’s
self-declaration (John 1:18). So, you want to know God? That’s
commendable. But look no farther than Jesus. He is the visible
image of the invisible God (see Colossians 1:15). In Him the fullness
of the Godhead dwells in bodily form (Colossians 2:9).
Jesus
is the Foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11).
He is the foundation upon which we build our Christian life. “But
surely” someone says, “the apostles and prophets are our
foundation.” Doesn’t the Bible say that we are built upon the
foundation of the apostles and prophets (Ephesians 2:20)? Yes, that’s
what it says … but read Ephesians 2:20 carefully. Jesus is the
foundation “of
“ the apostles and prophets. He is the One they built upon. Christ
alone is our foundation. Paul laid the foundation in the churches and
the foundation certainly wasn’t Peter or Paul or any other
apostles. Paul says, “For
other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus
Christ”
(1 Corinthians 3:11).
Jesus
is the first and the last
(Revelation
1:17-18).
He has no beginning and no end. He is Eternal (John 1:1; Isaiah
44:6). Think about this!
Jesus
is the spotless Lamb of God (John 1:29).
Only a sinless person could die on behalf of guilty sinners like you
and me. Christ, the Passover lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7) had to be
without blemish (Exodus 12:5;1 Peter 1:19). Jesus was without defect,
distortion or deformity both spiritually and physically.
Jesus
is our peace (Ephesians 2:14).
There are three types of peace. Peace with God, peace within
ourselves and peace with one another. Jesus is all three.
Jesus
is our hope (1 Timothy 1:1).
He is the expectation of good things to come. In times of trouble He
is our Hope. In times of danger, He is our hope. When we think of
eternity, He is our hope.
Jesus
is our life (Colossians 3:4). According
to this verse, Christ is our life. He shall appear and
we shall appear with Him in glory.
The only reason we live
is because He is our life. Justice looks at us and says, “Cut them
down.” But the Saviour steps in with His blood and says, “Spare
and restore them.”
Jesus
is the living and true Way (John 14:6).
There is no other way to the Father than by Jesus, the true way. He
is also the Old Way to the Father. He was the way by which Adam,
Abel, Enoch and the Patriarchs were all justified by faith. He is not
only the Old Way. He is the New and living Way to God (see Hebrews
10:20).
Jesus
is our Propitiation (1 John 4:10).
Not everyone knows this word ‘propitiation’. In brief, a
propitiation is a wrath offering … an offering which takes away the
wrath of God.
To complete a propitiation, three things were needed … a Priest, an
Altar and a fitting sacrifice. In Christ we have all three.
Jesus
is our Refuge (Hebrews 6:18).
A refuge is a place where people seek shelter in times of trouble.
Believers are under continual attack from the lust of the flesh, and
the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John2:16). We need a
refuge from guilt, temptation and danger. Jesus is the heaven
approved and all-sufficient refuge for His people.
Jesus
is our Song (Psalm 118:14).
He is the song of every believer. He has freely taken our sins and
cast them away. What a cause for rejoicing. Because of His doing,
dying and rising again, He has become our song. He is the one in whom
we have confidence. He is our song. May we hope and trust in no
other. May we learn to sing to Him and make melody in our heart unto
Him (Ephesians 5:19). He is our song.
And that’s the
Gospel Truth!
