Why Preach the Gospel to the non-Elect?

When people are confronted with the true gospel of God’s sovereign grace in Christ, they often ask this question: “If those who are not elected will not be saved, then why preach the gospel to them?”

1. It is to be preached to them because God in His infinite wisdom, holiness, righteousness and sovereignty has commanded it to be done. “And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” [MARK 16:15].

2. It is to be preached to them because their rejection of Christ will reveal their true nature of sin and the reason for their just condemnation and judgment. It leaves men without excuse. “But ye believe not, because ye are not of My sheep, as I said unto you” [JOHN 10:27].

3. It is to be preached because it is pleasing to God and it glorifies Him as a just God as well as a Savior. “Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside Me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside Me” [ISAIAH 45:21].

4. It is to be preached because the whole world is to be filled with the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ! “Declare His glory among the heathen, His wonders among all people[PSALM 96:3].

5. It is to be preached to them because, in their rejection, every believer, quickened by the Holy Spirit, is reminded of God’s great and particular grace and mercy to them. They see that it is God that makes them to differ.

6. It is to be preached to them because the elect of God are scattered among them and God alone knows who they are. This is the means He uses to distinguish the elect and call them out. “Whereunto He called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” [II THESSALONIANS 2:14].

7. It is to be preached to expose the false gospel, “another gospel.” “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” [GALATIANS 1:8].

8. It is to be preached because it is a declaration of the Lordship, Kingship and sovereignty of Christ the righteous Judge over ALL. “Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: He shall judge the people righteously” [PSALM 96:10].

9. It is to be preached to them to remind men of Christ’s sure return. “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?” [II CORINTHIANS 2:14-16].
