The Sheep of His Hand
God speaks to His people in ways of such condescending grace so that they can understand and be comforted in what He promises. One way is what are called “anthropomorphisms.” An anthropomorphism is “the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to God.” God was described as walking in the garden of Eden and having His eyes on the sparrow. These are characteristics of men not God who is Spirit.
But
God became a man with all the characteristics of men (sin excluded)
that He might save His people. He came as the GodMan in the man
Christ Jesus. Now the Lord Jesus Christ has the hands of a man but
they are the hands of God! Listen to Him in JOHN
10:28: “And
I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither
shall any man pluck them out of My hand.”
To assure us of our security and safety in Christ, He speaks of “My
hand.”
All
who trust Christ, His sheep as He calls them here are safe in His
HAND. He has laid down His life for them is the total satisfaction of
God’s justice in the matter of their sins. He has called them unto
Himself and holds them safe from every adversary and danger, even
themselves! He has given them eternal life and they shall never
perish because they have been is His hands from all eternity. They
were put in His hands in the everlasting covenant as their Surety.
They
were in His hands when they were in Him to the cross, when
they died in Him and were raised in Him and seated with Him in the
heavenlies. His firm grip on them is such that He will not let them
go or allow anything or anyone to “pluck” them out of His hand.
And as He and the Father are one, He further says, “My
Father, which gave them Me, is greater
than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My
Father's hand” (John
10:29). What safety, security, nearness and blessedness
belongs to those in Christ. We can trust Him and rest.
He
is all our salvation and we are in His hand. Men say, “You’re in
good hands with ______.” Not if you’re not in the hands of
Christ! There is no place safe but there. Not only are we safe in the
hands of God but all that belongs to us and pertains to us is too.
“For He is our God; and we are
the people of His pasture, and the sheep
of His hand....” (Psalm
95:7).
