He Changes Not
“For I am the
LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
-Malachi 3:6 KJV
These words are
sweet comfort to the Lord’s people who live in this changing world.
To keep us from getting too comfortable in ourselves and our
situations, our wise God “stirs the nest.” “As an eagle
stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her
wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: so the LORD alone did
lead him, and there was no strange god with him” (Deuteronomy 32:11-12).
Like the eagle, who
stirs the nest of her young ones removing some of the soft feathered
outer lining to expose the sharper sticks below, the Lord does
changes things so that we remember that we can only trust Him. He
rearranges our comfortable little “nests.” All human comfort and
confidence fails. He brings us into situations and circumstances in
which we are made to know that He alone is our Strength and our
Salvation. Like the eaglet out of the comfortable nest and fearfully
seeking to fly with its mother, we feel our weakness and frailty.
Our confidence in
self and in others diminishes and we are drawn back to the wing of
Him who changes not. God’s immutability is again our refuge. He
never changes in His love for His people. He never changes in His
covenant promises to them. He never changes in His faithfulness to
them. He never changes their standing before Him because He has
brought them by His grace into an unchangeable state of justification
before Him in Christ. They are redeemed by the blood of Christ and
cannot be unredeemed. They are saved with an everlasting salvation,
made the righteousness of God in Christ and much more.
So whatever “change”
is or has taken place in the lives of His believing people, our God
hasn’t and won’t! Rest in that thought; it is why we will not be
consumed! As the hymn writer wrote, “Change
and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with
me.”
