 Just How Many Redeemers Are There?

by D.G. Miles McKee

It is a stunning fact to grasp that it was God Himself who undertook and accomplished our redemption.  Has that truth yet warmed our hearts?  William Romaine, that most excellent and wise 18th century Bible scholar said;

“There was no Saviour but Jehovah: therefore, Jehovah and Jesus are one. We read in Isaiah 49:26, “All flesh shall know that I Jehovah am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty one of Jacob.” Also, the prophet Jeremiah says, “Their Redeemer is strong, Jehovah of hosts is His name” (Jeremiah 50:34); the name Jehovah belongs to the Redeemer; it is His incommunicable title.”

-William Romaine: The Self-Existence of Jesus Christ.

Jesus saves His people by redeeming them. Some like to argue, however, that although Christ is a savior there are, after all, various types of saviors  (see II Kings 13:5, Obadiah 1:21, Nehemiah 9:27).  Good point!  However, none of these so-called saviors brought redemption.  It is God’s prerogative alone to redeem His people. God as Savior not only delivers His people but also redeems them. Yahweh is not only our Creator, Provider and Protector, but He is also our Redeemer. The great Scottish preacher, Alexander Whyte said, "The longer I live, the firmer my faith is rooted in the Godhead of my Redeemer. No one, short of the Son of God, could meet my case. I must have one who is able to save to the uttermost."

 The Scriptures are clear on this matter of the Lord God being the Redeemer. Consider the following,

“But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and He that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine.” Isaiah 43:1.

Isaiah 44:25

I have swept away your offenses like a cloud,
your sins like the morning mist.
Return to me, for I have redeemed you.

Isaiah 48:17, Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer,
The Holy One of Israel: I am the LORD your God which teacheth thee to profit,which leadeth thee by the way thou shouldest go.

Isaiah 49:26; “know that I the LORD am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.”

Isaiah 60:16; “and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.”

This then begs the question; does Christ redeem? If He redeems then He is shown, without dispute, to be the Eternal God.  Let’s see what the Scriptures say on this point:

Romans 3:23 “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:”

Ephesians 1:7 “In Whom (Christ) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace;

Hebrews 9:15 “And for this cause He (Christ) is the mediator of the New Testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Titus 2:14 “Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity.”

These four scriptures plainly state that Christ is the Redeemer. Since it is the Lord God Yahweh who alone redeems and since Christ is presented to us as the redeemer then, unless there are two redeemers redeeming their people, we must once more conclude Christ to be God.

And that´s the Gospel Truth!
