Gospel Truth from the Philippian Jailer, Part II
Last week we noted that Jesus was much more than a man. Here are some scriptures to further help us understand this great truth. Isaiah 45:21b-22 reads “…there is no God else beside Me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside Me. Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else." Notice that there is only one God and Saviour and if we are to be saved, it must be through Him. “But,” someone says, “those verses are not talking about Jesus! They are talking about Yahweh!” Exactly! Jesus is Yahweh! Follow what we are saying. Did you notice that the speaker in this passage is the Saviour? What a giveaway! Anyone who has read the New Testament will tell you that, according to its pages, Jesus is the Saviour. (Matthew 1:21;1 Timothy 1:15;Titus 2:13). Then the following verse, (Isaiah 45:23), declares that every knee will have to bow and every tongue confess to God. Do you recognize this business of bowing and confessing before God? In the New Testament, we are told that every knee shall bow and confess to the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 2:10-11). This is once more a powerful proof of Jesus’ deity.
Yahweh humbled Himself, took on Himself a human nature and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. He now has a name which is above every name: and at that name, the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, of things in heaven, and things on earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (see Philippians 2:10-11). As one old-time preacher put it, “Christ emptied Himself, made Himself of no reputation, came down to this earth in a servant's form, and as man accomplished a work by which God is glorified and sin put away. “ What happened then? What happened was that the man Jesus was raised from the dead, ascended to heaven, and is now seated in cosmic glory and authority. And at His name, the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow. Every being whether angelic or human must and will bow to the name of Jesus, and confess that He is Lord. But back to the story of the Philippian jailor. In Acts 16:32, Paul spoke the word of the Lord unto him. In other words, he spoke the gospel unto the jailor. Paul would have told this poor bewildered man about the person of Christ, His life, His death, His resurrection. Now he can really believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Does anyone you know ever ask, “What have I got to do to be saved?“ If they do, take them to the story of the Philippian jailor. The jailer heard the gospel, believed and was saved. That jailer wanted salvation and got it. He asked how he could be saved and was given the answer. He was told to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and then was told who the Lord Christ was and what He had done. The jailer became a saved man, through simply believing God's message concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other way for us to be saved than by the way in which that man was saved. And that’s the Gospel Truth!
