UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

“These things understood not His disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things unto Him.” -John 12:16 [KJV]
When the Lord is pleased to glorify and reveal Himself to us and in us, in
the way of mercy and grace, then He also gives us an understanding of the gospel of Christ (I John 5:20). Consider these four things:
When we see the glory of His electing grace (Ephesians 1:3-6), then He gives us an understanding, that had Christ not chosen us we never would have believed and loved Him (II Thessalonians 2:13).
When we see the glory of His atonement for our sin, how complete, how eternal, how full and how powerful it is, that our sin is put away forever (Hebrews 9:26 & 10:14-17), then He gives us an understanding to see and know the absolute necessity for Christ to put away our sin (I John 1:7) and how futile and useless is our vain attempts to redeem ourselves by the deeds of the flesh or law, “...by the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Romans 3:19-24). We are redeemed by the blood of Christ alone (I Peter 1:18-20).
When we see the glory of His salvation, taking the rebel and making him righteous in Christ, taking the ignorant and the foolish and making them new creatures in Christ, taking those dead in sin and giving them spiritual life (Ephesians 2:1), then we understand the need of the new birth, regeneration and being reconciled to God in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17- 21).  
 
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see (understand) the kingdom of God” (John 3:3-8).
When we see the glory of His person, who the Lord Jesus Christ really is, Almighty God and sinless man in one blessed person (I Timothy 3:16), then we have understanding of the only Object of saving faith (Hebrews 12:2) and the only message we are to preach (John 12:41; I Corinthians 2:2 & II Timothy 4:1-4).

LORD JESUS, Be Merciful...

" LORD, be merciful to me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee." -Psalm 41:4 [KJV] Is this the language of the man after God’s own heart? Was David a saint when he uttered it? Yes, he was a holy man of God. This confession and prayer shew it. His heart was not hardened through the deceitfulness of sin, nor blinded by self-righteous pride, so as to say, “I have no sin.”   Self-righteous hearts cannot away with this, that all the Lord’s saints are yet in themselves miserable sinners; that they daily see need to confess this; and to sue for mercy and healing from the Lord. Great Encouragement in Christ JESUS ~ 19 October, 2025 A.D.

"Behold, he prayeth!"   -Acts 9:11 [KJV] In many trades, it is customary to shew samples or patterns. By these men judge of the goodness or quality of the whole. St. Paul sets himself forth as a sample, or pattern, of the free, distinguishing, sovereign, unmerited grace of God, that we should judge of its nature by its efficacy upon him. “I obtained mercy, for this cause, that in me first   (-a first rate sinner) Jesus Christ may shew forth His all long suffering, for a pattern to them who should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting”   (I Timothy 1:16.) Thou hast seen this pattern of free grace. What dost thou think of it?  The whole is alike with the pattern. It cometh alike upon elect sinners. It finds no more prerequisites, fitness, qualifications, or conditions in any, than it did in St. Paul. Whenever it takes place upon any, it produceth the same effects as it did in him.
