"Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee ."   -I Samuel 20:4 [KJV] Such is the language of generous love, and sincere friendship. There never was a greater instance of it, subsisting between men, than between Jonathan and David. Poor David was in great distress. Saul sought his life. He flies to his friend Jonathan, opens his whole heart to him, and solemnly assures him, “As thy soul liveth, there is but one step between me and death.”   On which, Jonathan thus declares his love and faithfulness. “Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.”  How must David’s heart be affected by this noble, this loving promise! O Christian, here is somewhat very similar to thine own case. Consider,  (1st.) There is but a step between thee and death. Thou knowest not how soon thy last step may be taken. Hast thou not made a voluntary surrender of thyself to Jesus, and given thyself to Him in an everlasting covenant which cannot be broken? Oh yes, yes, all this is certain. Lord, grant me grace and faith in lively exercise, that I may now take to myself all the blessedness of it by anticipation; until I come to realize the whole in absolute enjoyment in glory. "Behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD."   -Jeremiah 45:5 [KJV] The Lord may be said spiritually to "bring evil upon all flesh,"  when He lays trouble and calamity upon the flesh, and upon all that the flesh loves. The blow falls upon the fruits of the flesh, when it cuts down fleshly religion, and roots up false hopes, vain confidence, and self-dependence.    The effect of these strokes is to lay the soul poor and needy at the footstool of mercy; and as the Holy Ghost enlightens the eyes to see, quickens the soul to feel, and raises up power to ask, there is now a seeking after real things—substance as opposed to shadows. Thus pardon, mercy, the testimony of God in the soul, the lifting up of the light of His countenance, the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus upon the conscience, with all the other spiritual blessings revealed in the gospel, are sought after, valued, and prized.
