Prayer, The Last Weapon of our Warfare

" Praying always with all prayer." -Ephesians 6:18 [KJV] A person by way of banter, once said to me, “I will treat you with a play, if you will go with me to-night.” I thanked him, and told him, I would accompany him, if I could be sure it would bring more of the love of Christ into my heart. This, this is worth living for, using any means to promote, and going any where to procure.  But, here is a weapon, which defends us against all temptations to go to such places, or do such things as are contrary to the peace of our souls, and which tend to damp the love of Christ in our hearts. That soul, who keeps up sweet fellowship with God, at a throne of grace, is dead to sensual gratifications. The more prayer, the more spiritual life from Christ. The more spiritual life, the more prayer to Christ.  Praying. This is the last weapon of our warfare: it will be used by soldiers at the last moment of life. God be merciful to me a sinner: Jesus save or I perish , are sui...

Poor, Sin-sick Beggars COME TO CHRIST JESUS Today!

"By the high-way side begging." -Mark 10:46 [KJV] My soul, learn a lesson from the beggar this morning. And Oh Thou blessed Friend of beggars, do Thou sweetly make the view gracious to my soul. What was it led this poor man to the high-way side to seek alms? Surely his poverty, wretchedness, and a sense of want. And art thou come forth, my soul, from the same cause, and on the same errand? I presume this poor creature came forth empty; for had he been full he would never have come.  And art thou so, my soul! for otherwise it is certain, they that are full in themselves never seek Jesus. But amidst his want and poverty, had this poor beggar hopes that the passers by would commiserate his case and relieve him? Yes, no doubt: though some might overlook and disregard him, all would not. But, my soul, thy case far exceeds his. Though all disregard, Jesus will not: and thou art sure He will pass by, and not only behold thy misery, but give thee needed relief. Jesus, M...

The Genuine Breathings of a Child-like spirit...

"And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in Thee." -Psalm 39:7 [KJV] True religion is a very simple thing. Simplicity is stamped upon all the works of God, and especially upon the work of grace. The more genuine, therefore, our religion is, the more simple it will be. To be simple is to be child-like, and to be child-like is to have the mind and spirit without which no man can enter into the kingdom of heaven. Can we, then, with this child-like simplicity, walk step by step here with David, and follow him throughout? Can we put our seal to these things and say, "Lord, what wait I for?" Is your religion brought into this narrow point? "Truly my soul waiteth upon God; from Him cometh my salvation" (Psalm 62:1.) "My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him" (Psalm 62:5.) Such a frame of soul is indeed from the hand of God, for no man ever did, or could bring himself into it. And if we can enter into one part ...
