Preachers Today Contrasted to Men of Old

• Preachers today are licensed and ordained by the church; men of old were ordained and sent by God. •  Preachers today go forth armed with degrees and credentials; men of old went forth anointed by the Holy Spirit. •  Preachers today are questioned by committees and hired to preach what the church believes; men of old came preaching, “Thus saith the L ORD .” •  Preachers today give themselves to programs, visitation, church business; men of old “gave themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word.” •  Preachers today preach and men are persuaded to move their membership; men of old preached and “they were pricked in their hearts and cried, ‘Men and brethren, what shall we do?’” •  Preachers today pray and the organ plays softly; Elijah prayed and the fire of God fell. •  Preachers today are afraid that they will offend someone; Paul was afraid that he would not. If there is no offence, the gospel has not been preached . – Anonymous

The Faith of Christians is a Person

You may ask all other religions wherein their faith lieth, and they cannot answer on this wise.      Our faith is a Person: the gospel that we have to preach is a Person; and go wherever we may, we have something solid and tangible to preach.      If you had asked the twelve apostles, in their day, “What do you believe in?” they would not have needed to go round about with a long reply, but they would have pointed to their Master, and they would have said, “We believe Him.”      “But what are your doctrines?”      “There they stand incarnate.”      “But what is your practice?”      “There stands our practice. He is our example.”      “What, then, do you believe?”      “Hear ye the glorious answer of the apostle Paul, ‘ We preach Christ crucified .’”      Our creed, our body of divinity, our whole theo...

Jesus the Bread of Life   by D.G. Miles McKee   In John’s Gospel we find the seven  ‘I Am’  scriptures, spoken by Jesus to declare His Deity.  Among them we find John 6:35 where Jesus says,  “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst.”   Listening to this we must conclude that, if Jesus is not God, He can hardly be viewed as a repository of modesty.  Here He is setting Himself up as the Bread of Life; the One who gives life to the world. What a cheek, cheek that is, if He is not God!   Indeed, when we read this discourse, in John 6, we discover that Jesus makes a sevenfold reference to Himself as the Bread of Life (see verses 32 33, 35, 48, 50, 51, 58) .  According to the Master, this is the very bread that must be eaten, by faith, to receive everlasting life (see verses 50, 51 53, 54, 56, 57, 58) .  We should note that the Roman Communion makes much...

JESUS, WHO ALONE IS MIGHTY-TO-SAVE...

" Now the just shall live by faith." -Hebrews 10:38 [KJV] Then they will highly prize the word of God. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17.)   Prophets and apostles, Old Testament saints and New Testament believers speak by one and the same Spirit, one and the same language, of one and the same life. “The just shall live by his faith,” says Habakkuk 2:4 .  Mind, it is not said, The just, or The justified sinner, shall live for his faith. This would be to substitute faith in the room of its blessed Object, Jesus Who saith, “Because I live, ye shall live also" (John 14:19.)   Nor is it said, He shall live upon his faith. We are too apt to look more to, and live more upon, what we think faith, which is rather the feelings of sense, than upon Christ, the object of faith.  It is said of Esau, “By thy sword shalt thou live” (Genesis 27:40.) To have lived upon his sword, would have been hard food indeed. But he ...

Walking In & With Christ JESUS

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." -Galatians 5:25 [KJV] My soul, take this sweet scripture for thy motto, not only this day, but every day; for every day's walk should be the same with Jesus, by the Spirit. And surely, my soul, if Jesus really, truly, dwells in thee, He will manifest that He is at home, by ruling in thee. It is blessed, and gracious, and edifying, when out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh, and like the spouse, the lips drop as the honey-comb, sweetly of Jesus. But the life of Jesus in the soul, consisteth not in talking only of Jesus, but walking in Him, and walking with Him. But, my soul, how wilt thou accomplish these things, carrying about with thee as thou dost daily, a body of sin and death? There is but one plan, and that a simple plan, mortifying, indeed, to the pride of human nature, but giving glory to Jesus. Art thou truly content to be mortified, so that Jesus be glorified? If so, this is ...

None but LORD JESUS can do Helpless Sinners Good!

“L ORD , lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.” -Psalm 4:6 [KJV] The cry of the Church has always been, “L ORD , lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.” You may often feel as if immersed in the very shadow of death, and say with Heman, “I am counted with them that go down into the pit; I am a man that hath no strength” (Psalm 88:4) ; but the very feelings of death, the chill at your heart, and the cold sweat upon your brow, make you long for the appearance of Him Who is the Resurrection and the Life; and Who can in one moment whisper, “Fear not; I am alive for evermore and have the keys of hell and of death.” -Revelation 1:18 You may be pressed down at times with the power of unbelief, and think and say there never was a heart like yours, so unable to believe, so doubting at every step; but this deep conviction of your wretched unbelief, which is the Spirit’s work to shew (John 16:9) , only makes you long for that living faith of which Christ Hi...
