Look to Christ JESUS Alone
An old preacher once said, “False repentance damns many a sinner.” Here is what he meant. When men begin to see the enormity of their guilt and the fierceness of the wrath of God, they will run to anything for salvation, except to Christ the Lord. They will even rely and depend upon their sorrow over sin, instead of looking to and casting themselves upon Christ the only Redeemer.
I would never lessen the importance of
repentance, but repentance is not our Savior. Yes, we must be brought
by the Spirit to turn aside from our idols, dead works and
self-righteousness, but in leading us away from those things, the Spirit
of grace causes us to turn to and look only unto Christ and His work of
redemption for righteousness, salvation and everlasting life. Be
warned. Do not look to or depend upon any religious action.
Do not
look to or trust in your repentance, or your faith; neither salvation or
assurance is to be found in those things. Do not trust your
experiences or your feelings. Paul said of those who are truly born of
God, they “have no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3).
Do not look to or depend upon your decision! Do not look to or depend
upon your prayers! Do not look to or depend upon your Bible reading.
Do not look to or depend upon your tears!
Look to the Lord Jesus Christ
and depend upon Him Who alone satisfied all the requirements of God for
the salvation of sinners by His substitutionary, justice-satisfying
death upon the cross. In conversion, we look to Him alone. “Look unto Me and be ye saved all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:22).
We continue our life of faith by looking to Christ. “Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Someday in eternal glory, we will forevermore look upon His blessed face; then we shall “see Him as He is” (I John 3:2).
