God With Us, Part I
by D. G. Miles Mckee
“Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail the Incarnate Deity,
Pleased as man with man to dwell;
Jesus, our Emmanuel.”
“And they shall call His name Emmanuel which being interpreted is God with us.”
-Matthew 1:23
Christ´s name is Emmanuel which means God with us. Even a blind man on a galloping horse can see that this verse tells us that Jesus Christ is God. Two important truths can be learned from this scripture. First, Jesus is God and second, as God, He is with us. He is to be called Emmanuel, a Hebrew name which when translated means “God with us.” He is God with and amongst us; He is God as one of us; He is God, as a human, involved with humanity.
Jesus was and is truly God. It would indeed be impossible for Jesus our Emmanuel not to be God for His name is a revelation of His omnipresence … He is with us. Recently we touched on this matter of His omnipresence, but think about it again, for Him to be ‘with us’ He must be omnipresent. If He is not omnipresent, He cannot be with all of us at the same time … that’s a no-brainer! If He was a mere man and not omnipresent, He can be with me, but if He is with me then He is not with you and vice versa. But we are to call Him Emmanuel for He is God with all His people. He is the God Who is everywhere present at all times.
I don’t suppose the cults like to refer to Him as Emmanuel for they dare not admit to His omnipresence, and thus His Godhead. But in the Old Testament, 800 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah foretold His birth, saying, “Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:13-14). I suppose the cults must think that poor old Isaiah was wrong on this one! After all, if Jesus is not God, then He is not Emmanuel! If, however, the cults actually believe what they teach, they will have to tear Isaiah from their Bibles for the prophet dares to tell us that the virgin’s child would be Emmanuel. Not only so, but they must also shred Matthew from their Bibles as he concurs with Isaiah’s deception! It was, after all, Matthew who said,
“Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:22-23).
If the cults who deny Christ’s deity are correct, both Matthew and Isaiah are unreliable. They should shun them, but they don’t. However, the Scripture plainly says, “They shall call His name Emmanuel.” No ifs, ands or buts-- call Him Emmanuel-God with us!
What a Saviour we have! Jesus Christ, the almighty King of kings and Lord of lords, stooped to become an infant and, as Emmanuel, came here to be God with us! What immense condescension! Look and see His young teenage mother sustaining the sustainer of all things! There He is, in the stable, dependent and vulnerable yet, at the same time as He is guarded by His parents, He is guarding them as He upholds all things by the word of His power. Does this not call out a spirit of worship from us? Think of it, God in a feeding trough for cattle! There He is, a baby, lying there with no human Father and no divine Mother. He’s the Mighty God. He´s wonderful! ---to be continued.
And that´s the Gospel Truth!
