What Do You Think of Christ? Part I

by D.G. Miles McKee

Matthew 22: 41-42.

John Newton penned the following penetrating words,

“What think ye of Christ? is the test
To try both your state and your scheme;
You cannot be right in the rest,
Unless you think rightly of Him.”

What a stunning question! … “What think ye of Christ?”  Unfortunately, the truth is that many, many people don´t think of Him.

However, in the entire annals of human history Jesus Christ stands alone.  He is unique. He has no equals.  He has no near rivals.  He stands head and shoulders above all others.  He is Lord over all lords.  He is King over all kings. There´s no one like Him.

But what do you think of Him?

In my opinion, He´s Unique.  Now just to remind you, to classify something as unique means it is the only one of its kind.  There is no such a thing of something being more or most unique.  No indeed!  Jesus is unique.  He´s the only one of His kind.

Let´s look at some reasons why Jesus was unique? Maybe these things will help us to think more about Him.

He was unique,

1)           Because of the way He was born.

2)           Because of the way He lived.

3)           Because of the way He worked.

4)           Because of the way He dealt with sinners.

5)           Because of the way He died.

Let´s begin to unpack these 5 truths.

1 No man was ever born like Jesus.  He did not begin to live when He was conceived in His mother´s womb.  No indeed, His birth was only an incident in His life.  He had always been alive.  2000 years ago, He stepped down from His lofty throne and became human yet remained God.  For a little more than 30 years He revealed the mind and character of God and then went back to Glory and there He is today until the time of His physical return to planet earth.

His birth was only an incident in His life.  No one else can claim that.  I did not live before my birth and neither did you.  We had a beginning, but the Word was eternal (see John 1: 1-3;14).

The Word became flesh…He became a real, authentic human being.

Not only was His birth not His beginning He was also virgin born.  In other words, He had no earthly Father.  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit.  He recognised only God as His Father.  He was the son of God as opposed to the son of Joseph. Every time He referred to Himself as the Son of God He was upholding the grand truth of His Virgin Birth.

What do you think of Him? He was alive eternally before He was conceived in His mother´s womb. He was unique in His birth.

In Philippians 2:5-11 we read of Jesus “...Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him and given Him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

What an amazing gospel we have.

Listen to John Newton one more time,

“What think ye of Christ? is the test
To try both your state and your scheme;
You cannot be right in the rest,
Unless you think rightly of Him.”

There is no one like Him.

And that´s the Gospel Truth!

To be continued.
